Ole Miss Student Takes Action against Cancer

By Norman Seawright and Jon Haywood

Relay for Life is a well-known organization that aims to continue the fight against cancer.

The faces of those affected by cancer range from the common person to those in power.

Courtney Pearson is the chair of the Judicial Council, the Ole Miss Associated Student Body branch that hears and decides cases involving alleged individual or organizational violations of university policy.

She has been devoted to Relay for Life from a young age.

“I lost my grandmother to ovarian cancer,” Pearson said. “I started 15 years ago, when my mother took a job with the American Cancer Society.”

Pearson said she was more or less forced into working with Relay For Life, but she has since developed a passion for it that she tries to pass on to others.

“I would say that Relay For Life is not an event,” she said. “It’s an experience.”

Ole Miss’s Relay For Life event takes place this year on April 13. Click here to sign up.
