Ole Miss Turner Center Overcrowded During Spring

Senior Kailey Kemp works out at the Turner Center. She says that the increase in students using the Turner Center before Spring Break is a huge inconvenience.

With spring break just around the corner, more students are using the Turner Center to get in shape.

Senior Kailey Kemp works out at the Turner Center every day and has seen a significant increase in the amount of students.

“I work out here all the time, everyday since fall semester, my entire college career, and I always notice in the spring it gets a lot busier. It’s just a lot more crowded because you can tell all the spring breakers are working out,” says Kemp.

For many students, including Kemp, it is a huge inconvenience to have to modify their workouts to accommodate the increase in students working out.

“I have to wait on a machine or do something I didn’t want to do because someone is taking a spot that I already wanted,” explains Kemp.

Although finding a machine is difficult, it does not compare to getting into a fitness class. Students are encouraged to get to group fitness classes 15 minutes early, but most of the time that is not enough.

“If you’re not there 30 minutes before a class, you’re not going to get a spot, because classes fill up really quick,” says freshman Taelor Ruben.

“If you’re going to a class you may have to get here an hour and a half early and you still might not get in. My friend came to the 6:15 a.m. cycling class; she waited in line and got here 30 minutes early, and then they told her she couldn’t get in because there were only a limited number of spots at 6:15 in the morning,” says Kemp.

For many students, dealing with the lines and lack of equipment is reason enough to purchase memberships at other local gyms.

“I decided it was worth it to pay the extra $20 month for the convenience of being able to do the work out I want to do, when I want to do it, without having to wait in line,” says junior Haley Sanders of her decision to join Snap Fitness.

For those students who cannot afford to join another gym or just do not want to, attendance in the Turner Center typically decreases after spring break.
