Small Business Has Secret to Thriving in the Poor Economy

Several businesses throughout Oxford have been forced to close up shop in this poor economy. However, at least one small business seems to be doing just fine.

Dixie Dance is a small dance and gymnastics studio on Highway 6 in Oxford.

The owner, Meghan Anderson, bought the studio in 2004 following her graduation from the University of Mississippi.  Anderson graduated, bought the studio and got married all within three weeks. These days, Anderson has been concerned about the country’s economic downturn.

“I really thought it (the economy) would hurt my business and maybe even put me out of business, but it really hasn’t been that bad,” Anderson said.

The children who attend Dixie Dance Company learn dance, gymnastics and cheerleading. Their parents pay a monthly tuition, even if they have to sacrifice themselves, according to Anderson.

“I believe the arts are very important, and many dont give them the credit they deserve,” parent Dawn Cook said.
