Deli Brings a Bite of the Big Apple to Oxford, Miss.

David Skutnik comes from a family rich in Italian tradition.  Growing up in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Skutnik started learning culinary secrets from his mother Frances Fotino-Skutnik at an early age.

“David always liked to cook,” Frances said, “he would stand around the kitchen and ask me questions about what I was doing.”

Now Skutnik is putting that culinary tradition to good use with his new restaurant, Fotino’s Deli & Market on the historic Square in Oxford, Miss..

The restaurant is a tribute to Skutnik’s heritage and the New York delis where he grew up eating.

Skutnik, who graduated from Ole Miss in 1994, thought that Oxford was missing a deli where people could congregate and interact.

“In New York delis are where things happen,” Skutnik said.

And what better place to have such a spot than the Square?

The menu boasts a wide variety of overstuffed sandwiches and hoagies to choose from.

If you come in to Fotino’s you might run into Skutnik’s wife, his two sons or even his mother, who may be around perfecting the secret family marinara sauce.  All of which add up to a friendly, family atmosphere — a New York deli with a Southern spin.
