Ole Miss Rugby Top Player

Zach Valentine has been playing rugby for seven years now and says he has loved every second of it. He decided to get involved in the sport commonly described as “American football without pads,” because his older brother played and he figured he would give it a try.

With hard work and long hours of practice, Valentine has been able to make his way to the top of the Ole Miss team. He coach says he is looked at as a leader on and off the field, not only by his teammates, but also by spectators.

Valentine says rugby is not only his favorite sport to play, but also his favorite sport to watch. He says that he lives for the weekends when the team has games because he is a competitive player and loves to win. He says he loves knowing that he has helped his team succeed.

David Chapman, the Ole Miss rugby coach, goes by “Tiny.”

“The team has been doing pretty well this year so far, but we are hoping for bigger things and looking stronger with every practice,” said Chapman.

Valentine is eligible to play for one more year and says he cannot wait to see what is in store for the team in the coming season.

“My hopes for next year are to come into the fall season ready to play and win the SEC tournament. Winning that tournament will give the Ole Miss rugby team a lot of respect in the South and Division 2,” said Valentine. “It would also be a big stepping stone for the spring semester if we could make it not only to the Division 2 national tournament, but also winning it.”
